Minahasa is an area on the northern peninsula of Sulawesi flanked by two seas with a hilly contour. The location of the Minahasa community settlement in the past was in an inland area far from the coast. The Minahasa region has experienced several disasters in the past, both natural disasters in the form of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and floods, as well as disease outbreaks. The purpose of this study is to explore disaster management carried out in Minahasa and settlement arrangements from 1800 to 1945. The research method uses the Literature study method, with a multidisciplinary approach (geography, archaeology, and history). The results of the study show that the Dutch colonial government carried out disaster management in the Minahasa region by moving settlements to locations that were considered safer and building smaller, disaster-resistant houses. These activities were not only carried out by the Dutch colonial government but also by missionaries and zending in Minahasa. The results of this study are expected to provide information about disaster management in the past which can be an insight to overcome current and future disaster management problems. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
